Collecting is not for everybody. Very few are actually those that managed to solve the riddle and balance their hobby of collecting with work that can manage to provide enough profit, so that the collector’s dream is pursued.
There are not many people in Bulgaria that have managed to do this, but those who did, are very good in it. Boyan Radev for example is a very prominent collector, who at one moment decided to donate a huge part of his collection to the national history museum. To date he is his largest contributor. Svetlin Roussev, Valeri Stefanov, Svetlyo Kantardzhiev are some other more famous names from the Collectors’ Association in Bulgaria.
Every year the Association of Collectors in Bulgaria organizes a special event called “The Other Museum”. Then they expose for everybody who would like to see very rare exhibits from their own collections. And every year this event is attracting a lot of attention, because they really managed to include in their collections some very, very precious objects and artifacts.
I believe collectors are guarding much of Bulgaria’s history and cultural heritage, and that is something good. If it wasn’t them, now the same objects could’ve been in foreign museums, trafficked by treasure-hunters. Hopefully one day, all collectors will be as kind as Boyan Radev to donate what they’d found to the national museum.
